Hello Everyone. What the heck am I doing?
Hi. Welcome to my blog. This is a very mid 2000s approach to getting this off the ground but at least the tools are modern. I guess I should explain exactly what I am doing and how I arrived here.
The subject of History has had kind of a weird relationship with me over the last 3 or so years. In fact I’d almost call it a struggle. This is a subject that I remember being very into while I was growing up. To the point where I even decided to go to a college and get a degree in it. But as it turns out my career path has nothing to do with what I grew up reading and studying through school (and this is sadly the case for many history graduates). This has lead me to remind myself about how bad of a practitioner of history I am.
Over the last 3 years I’ve been trying to figure out how to in a sense “get myself back into history”. Now I also have ADHD and there’s probably a little bit of dyslexia in there so reading has always been kind of a chore for me. Luckily there are audio books and podcasts. So I went through the cycle of listening to some audio books and podcasts that are related to history but I encountered an issue as I was doing this. None of the information was being retained after reading/listening. This caused me to get a little depressed and almost made me think that history just wasn’t “doin it for me like it used to”.
After thinking about this for months (pandemic sure gave me a lot of time to think more about it) I realized that a big part of the reason I wasn’t retaining the information I was reading was because I wasn’t really doing anything with it. In the past the history I’d read would be directly applied to discussions, assignments and exams. This would further help me memories and think critically on the knowledge I’d gain. So I figured that what I need to do is be able to not only just read or listen to an event, but also have an avenue for expressing the knowledge I have gained. This in turn will give me more purpose to my study. So I began thinking of ways to apply the knowledge. At first I thought I could write history research papers on my own, but that is too self serving for myself. Next I thought I could teach. Now teaching is something I can get behind. To put it bluntly, I really like telling and showing people cool things. And I think history is pretty cool. But right now becoming a teacher is not really an option given where I am in my current career path. After talking about this with some close friends and doing some research I decided to pursue tutoring history.
So this is how I’ve arrived at the idea of wanting to tutor. It allows me to study history again, utilize the knowledge in a positive manner by teaching students, and allow me to use my creativity and expression in teaching the subject the way I think is most engaging to students. After coming to all of those conclusions I began the process of building this site and finding a book etc etc.
This has gone on for quite a while. Next time I’ll go over what my short term and long term goals are for this project as it is still getting off the ground and there will be a lot of training on my end that needs to be done.
Thank you and stay safe.
